Nanny Search Timeline: Why July Is the Best Month to Start Looking for Fall

Every August, we field a wave of calls from families who need a nanny in place by the first week of school. Some of those searches work out. Some don't– not because the family wasn't a good fit for our network, but because they started with weeks (sometimes days) to work with instead of months.

Here's why sooner beats later if you want a nanny in place for upcoming school year:

The Candidate Pool Shifts Every Summer

Nannies coming off a school-year placement or a summer role start actively looking for what's next in July and early August. That's true across Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, and beyond. It's also true that the strongest candidates in that pool get placed first. Fewer than 4% of applicants make it into our network to begin with, and within that group, the most sought-after ones don't stay unplaced for long.

Start your search in July, and you're choosing from the full pool. Start in late August, and you're choosing from an arguably narrower one.

What the Actual Timeline Looks Like

A thorough search runs 4 to 6 weeks from our first conversation to a signed agreement. That's time for us to understand what your family actually needs, time to identify and vet candidates against that, and time for interviews and a trial period before anyone commits.

Compress that into the two weeks before school starts and something gives. Usually it's how many candidates you actually get to meet, or how much runway you have to feel sure about them before their first day. Neither is a place to cut corners when the person you're hiring will be alone with your kids.

You're choosing from a full pool instead of a picked-over one, you have time for a real trial period before the first day of school actually matters, and you're not deciding under the kind of pressure that leads families to settle. If the first match isn't quite right, which happens sometimes even with careful matching, there's still time to adjust before your family's schedule depends on it.

If fall care is on your radar at all, even loosely, July is the month to make the first call. Starting the conversation doesn't commit you to anything. It just keeps you working from the full field of Triangle caregivers instead of whoever's still available in three weeks.
