The Difference Between a Standout Candidate Application and One That Gets Skipped

First things first – eligibility.

One of the things that sets us apart as an agency is that we also require at least three years of relevant work experience. Childless household management experience won’t qualify you for nanny gigs.  We don’t need to see childcare experience if you’re applying for only eldercare roles. We’re looking for experience that is pertinent, paid, and professional, meaning you were 18 or older when you did it, you weren’t working for a family member, and it has something to do with the role you’re looking for next.

You’ve got our attention by meeting the eligibility criteria– keep it with precision.

Immediately, we’re side-eyeing your application a bit if the proper nouns aren’t capitalized and the places are misspelled. Would we ever immediately DQ a candidate for writing their name in all lowercase letters or not catching that “Cary” autocorrected to “Carry?” Of course not, but we haven’t met a client yet who doesn’t have attention to detail at the top of their candidate wishlist. Don’t miss easy points!

Your resume is the star of your application.

We’re looking for Word docs or PDFs (no photos or screenshots, please!) of all of your applicable experience. A standout resume is typo-free, neatly organized, and includes a detailed breakdown of each employer individually. For each role, there should be start and end dates, the ages of the kids when you started, and a quick summary of your main job duties. If you have degrees, certifications, or awards, throw those in there too! We want to know every bit of what makes you a top-tier applicant. Just remember that we’ll ask for proof later in the process.

If you’re including a photo, keep it classy.

Headshots are entirely optional, but if you’re going to submit one, the best pictures are ones of you by yourself in front of a neat background wearing a professional top. With the bottom half of the photo missing, tube tops and strapless dresses create a kind of naked impression that you’re probably not going for. You don’t need to be in a blazer by any means, but let’s save the bikinis, shot glasses, and Halloween costumes for the personal photo albums. (We’ll be scanning your social media later on, so you should probably keep them offline, too, but more about that in a different blog post.)
