The role

What an elder care companion does

An elder care companion supports an aging parent who needs more help than the family can give, but isn't ready for assisted living. They're there for company and daily life at home, not medical care.

Companionship

Conversation, reading aloud, cards and puzzles, and keeping up the hobbies your parent loves.

Meals

Nutritious meals your parent will actually eat, and help with eating if it's needed.

Appointments and errands

Groceries, prescriptions, and rides to the doctor or a lunch with friends, with someone to come along.

Moving safely

Help walking, getting in and out of bed or a chair, and using a walker or wheelchair.

Personal care

Help dressing, grooming, and bathing, depending on what your parent needs.

Eyes and ears for the family

Medication reminders, a home checked for fall hazards, and a note to you when something seems off.

Companion, home health aide, or assisted living?

Families usually look at these three when a parent starts needing more help. A companion fills the space between family support and a move.

Who we work with

Raleigh families who hire an elder care companion

Most of our elder care clients are adult children doing their best for a parent while working, raising kids, or living away.

The sandwich generation

You're caring for your kids and your parent

School pickup at 3, Mom's appointment at 3:30, and a full-time job. A companion takes the daily care so your time with your parent can be time together, not a list of chores.

Parents who moved to Raleigh

You moved your parent closer, and they don't know anyone

A new city can be lonely. A companion gets them out to the grocery store, church, and the Greenway, and gives them someone to talk to every day.

Long-distance families

You live hours away

You can't drop by on a Tuesday. A companion is there, notices the small changes, and keeps you informed between visits.

Need help managing a parent's appointments, bills, and paperwork? A personal assistant can handle the logistics while the companion handles daily care.

Setting up the role

Three decisions that make a Raleigh companion role work

Our companions stay with families four to five years or more on average. The roles that last are set up with these in mind.

1

Be clear about the care level

A companion helps with daily life, reminders, and moving safely, but doesn't give medications or provide clinical care. If your parent needs nursing tasks, we'll talk about pairing a companion with a home health agency, or about what comes next.

2

Plan for the driving

Appointments at WakeMed or UNC Rex, the pharmacy, and the grocery store add up. Decide whose car is used, how mileage is reimbursed, and whether your parent can get in and out of it easily. We check driving records during screening.

3

Check how you'll pay for it

A companion you hire directly is your household employee, paid privately. Medicare doesn't cover non-medical companion care, and many long-term care insurance policies only reimburse care from a licensed home care agency. Check your policy before you hire.

Questions about elder care companions in Raleigh

How much does an elder care companion cost in Raleigh, NC?

Elder care companions we place typically earn $25 to $35 per hour. At 20 hours a week, that's $500 to $700 a week in base wages; at 40 hours, $1,000 to $1,400. Payroll taxes and agency fees are separate.

Can a companion give my parent their medications?

A companion can remind your parent to take medications at the right times, but doesn't administer them or provide clinical care like wound care. If your parent needs nursing tasks, a licensed home health agency can work alongside the companion.

Will a companion help with bathing and dressing?

Yes, depending on what your parent needs. Personal care like dressing, grooming, and bathing is part of many companion roles. Tell us on the discovery call so we recruit companions experienced with it.

How do we know if a companion is enough, or it's time for assisted living?

A companion is a good fit when your parent can live safely at home with daily support and company. If they need care around the clock or regular medical care, it may be time to look at other options. We're happy to talk it through on the discovery call.
