The role

What a postpartum doula does

A doula is a trained professional who gives continuous physical, emotional, and informational support around childbirth. A postpartum doula's focus is the weeks after: your recovery, your confidence, and keeping the house running while everyone adjusts. Most work with a family for 3 to 11 weeks.

Recovery and rest

Making sure you eat, drink, rest, and heal, and noticing when something about your recovery or mood needs a call to your provider.

Feeding support

Help learning breastfeeding and pumping techniques, setting feeding schedules, and sanitizing bottles and pump parts.

Meals for the family

Healthy meals for parents and kids, so dinner isn't one more thing to figure out.

The household

Household laundry, changed linens, a tidied house, and a restocked changing table.

Siblings

Time and attention for older kids, so they adjust to the new baby too.

Tracking and sleep

Logging feeds, diapers, and sleep in an app you share, and helping with early sleep routines.

Postpartum doula or newborn care specialist?

Who we work with

Raleigh families who hire a postpartum doula

A postpartum doula helps most when the people who'd usually step in can't. These are the families we hear from most.

No family nearby

Your support system is a long flight away

Many Raleigh families moved here for work and don't have parents down the street. A doula fills the role a grandparent might: meals, laundry, and someone to hold the baby while you shower.

A harder recovery

You're healing from a C-section or a tough birth

Lifting, stairs, and long nights are hard when you're recovering. A doula handles the physical work around the house so you can follow your provider's recovery plan.

Bigger families

There's a toddler too

A new baby changes everything for an older sibling. A doula keeps their days steady, with meals, school runs, and attention, while you focus on the newborn.

Want someone to handle the nights as well? Some families pair a doula during the day with a newborn care specialist overnight.

Setting up the role

Three decisions that make a Raleigh doula placement work

Postpartum support works best when it's planned before the birth, while you still have the energy to think it through.

1

Book before the third trimester

Experienced doulas book months ahead, and their calendars fill around due dates. Reach out in your second trimester if you can. Due dates move, so we'll build some flexibility into the start date.

2

Write down what help means to you

Some parents want hands-on feeding coaching; others want meals made and the laundry gone. Make a short list: the tasks you'd hand off, the ones you want to learn yourself, and anything that's off-limits.

3

Plan the first week home

Know when your doula starts: the day you come home from WakeMed, UNC Rex, or Duke Raleigh, or a few days later once a partner's leave ends. If you also want labor support, check your hospital's current support-person policy. Some of our doulas also support labor and birth.

Questions about postpartum doulas in Raleigh

What does a postpartum doula do?

A postpartum doula supports the parents after birth: recovery, rest, feeding support, healthy meals, household laundry, tidying, and care for older siblings. They also log feeds, diapers, and sleep in an app you share.

What's the difference between a postpartum doula and a newborn care specialist?

A postpartum doula focuses mainly on the parents and the household. A newborn care specialist focuses mainly on the baby, especially overnight care, feeding, and sleep. Some families use both: a doula during the day and an NCS at night.

How long does a postpartum doula usually stay?

Most of our doula placements last 3 to 11 weeks, depending on your recovery, your support at home, and when you or your partner go back to work.

When should I book a postpartum doula in Raleigh?

In your second trimester if you can. Experienced doulas book months ahead, and the best ones fill up around due dates.

How much does a postpartum doula cost in Raleigh?

Doulas are paid hourly, and the total depends on how many hours a week and how many weeks you need. Overnight support and twins usually cost more. We'll share the current Raleigh range for your schedule on your discovery call.

Do your doulas support labor and birth too?

Some do. If you'd like support during labor as well as after, tell us early so we can look for a doula who does both, and check your hospital's current support-person policy.

Tell us what support would help most.

Share your due date and what help at home looks like for you. We'll review it and reach out to set up your discovery call.
