The role

What a private educator does

A private educator teaches your child one-on-one or in a small group, outside a traditional classroom. Some Raleigh families hire one to run a full homeschool; others want a teacher for a pod, or focused support alongside school.

Homeschool instruction

Daily lessons built around your child's pace, learning style, and interests, with the scope and materials you approve.

Learning pods

Teaching a small group of children from one or two families, with the socialization a pod gives them.

Academic support

Homework help, test prep, study skills, and catching up in a subject that's become a struggle.

Enrichment

Going further in a subject your child loves, from advanced math to a second language.

Learning differences

Customized strategies for children who learn differently, coordinated with their therapists and school.

Progress you can see

Regular updates on progress and challenges, with teaching adjusted as your child grows.

Who we work with

Raleigh families who hire a private educator

Families come to us for a private educator for different reasons, but most want one thing: teaching that fits their child.

Homeschooling families

You've chosen to homeschool, and want help teaching

You set the direction and the curriculum, and a private educator does the daily teaching. Many families pair one educator with a small group of siblings or one other family.

A semester off

Your child needs a break from school

A medical need, a hard year, or a family move can mean a semester at home. A private educator keeps your child on track so the return to school is smooth.

Travel and performance

Your child's schedule doesn't fit a school day

Competitive sports, performing arts, or a family that travels for work. An educator who travels with you keeps lessons going; expect those roles to pay at the top of the range.

Need help after school, rather than instead of it? A part-time nanny with tutoring experience may be a better fit.

Setting up the role

Three things to settle before hiring a Raleigh educator

Most of what makes a private educator role work is decided before the first lesson.

1

Know North Carolina's homeschool rules

If your educator teaches instead of school, you're running a North Carolina home school. Parents file a notice of intent with the state, and the person teaching needs at least a high school diploma. You keep attendance and immunization records and give a standardized test each year.

2

Keep a pod to two families

Under North Carolina law, a home school serves the children of no more than two families or households, and the parents decide what's taught. Larger pods need a different structure, so plan the group size before you hire.

3

Choose an approach

Some families want a traditional curriculum that maps to Wake County grade levels for an easy return to school. Others want Montessori, Reggio, Waldorf, or Forest School methods. Deciding first narrows the search to the right educators.

Questions about private educators in Raleigh

How much does a private educator cost in Raleigh, NC?

Private educators we place typically earn $30 to $50 per hour, depending on the hours, subjects, number of students, and travel. At 40 hours a week, that's about $62,000 to $104,000 a year in base wages, before payroll taxes and agency fees.

Can a private educator run our homeschool in North Carolina?

Yes. Parents file the home school notice of intent and decide what's taught, and the educator can do the daily teaching. Under state rules the person providing instruction needs at least a high school diploma, and you'll keep attendance and immunization records and give an annual standardized test. Check current requirements with the NC Division of Non-Public Education.

Can we share a private educator with another family?

Yes. A learning pod with one other family is common, and it splits the cost. North Carolina home schools are limited to the children of two families or households, so larger groups need a different structure.

Can we hire a private educator for one semester?

Yes. Some families hire for a single semester, often when a child is struggling in school or needs time away for medical reasons. Full-year roles average two to three years.

What does Triangle Nannies charge to place a private educator?

A non-refundable $500 retainer is due when your search begins. After a successful placement, the placement fee is 20% of the educator's first-year annual salary, with an $8,000 minimum for part-time and full-time placements as set out in the Master Service Agreement. See full pricing details.

Do you place Montessori or Waldorf educators?

Yes. We work with educators trained in Montessori, Reggio, Waldorf, and Forest School approaches, as well as traditional curricula. Tell us your approach on the discovery call and we'll recruit for it.
